Casting a Legacy: The Outdoorsman

Located on Grand Lake St Marys and serving as the area’s premier marine retailer, The Outdoorsman has been a staple in the community for decades. Originally opened as a simple bait and tackle shop in the early 1970s, it was purchased by Dan and Brenda Manning in 1991, who have since grown it into a full-service marine business known for its expertise and personal touch. Their strong relationship with a community-focused bank has played a key role in helping them grow, adapt, and continue serving customers for over 30 years.
Growing up in Beavercreek, Ohio, Dan has fond memories of fishing as a child and visiting a shop much like the one he owns today. When the Mannings moved to the area in 1987, years before becoming small business owners, they already had a connection to The Outdoorsman. As Brenda recalled, “Every week after church, he’d stop here and buy wax worms, and he’d always say, ‘I’d like to own a store like that someday.'” Whether it was manifestation or simply meant to be, Dan and Brenda have always felt like the perfect fit to carry on the spirit of this local business.
Owning a small business comes with its share of challenges, and for the Mannings, some of the toughest arrived unexpectedly in the late 2000s. During the economic downturn, The Outdoorsman faced one of its most difficult seasons – not only from the national recession, but also from a local environmental crisis when a harmful blue-green algae outbreak hit Grand Lake St Marys. Practically overnight, business dropped by more than 60%, and what had always been a strong marine season came to a halt. But through it all, Minster Bank stood by their side.
“Minster Bank has been great to work with – they know us, they’re responsive, and they’ve helped us grow over the years.” – Dan Manning
During a time when some financial institutions may have pulled support, Minster Bank worked closely with them to restructure lines of credit so they could weather the economic storm. That flexibility and partnership helped The Outdoorsman stay afloat – literally and financially – proving the value of a community bank that truly knows and supports the people it serves.
