Learn How to Pay On the Go With Your Phone

Mobile wallet options mean making a payment is easier than ever. You don’t even need to carry a card or cash! Learn more about how a mobile wallet works.

What is a mobile wallet?

View Demo

A mobile wallet is an app on a smartphone that has your payment details already stored (such as a credit card, debit card or rewards card). When it’s time to pay at a participating location, simply hold or wave your phone over the store’s card reader.

This can be a safer, no-touch way to pay. And because your information is already stored in the app, you won’t need to carry a credit or debit card with you.

Mobile wallets can also be used to store other information besides payment - like health insurance cards, a driver’s license, your hotel room key code, and more. And some offer additional features, like being able to send money to other people or track your spending habits.

How do I start using a mobile wallet?

There are numerous options available for mobile wallet apps. Some of the most popular and most trusted include:

Apple Pay® (for use with iPhones)

Google Pay Button Google Pay® (for use with Androids)

Samsung Pay® (for use on Samsung devices)

Once you download the app, follow the in-app instructions to set up your account and add your information.

When you’re ready to pay, simply check that the store or website accepts a mobile wallet payment (millions of stores in the United States do). Depending on your device, you may need to open the app and select the card you want to use. Then, simply wave or hold your device over the card reader and the payment should process.

Is a mobile wallet secure?

You don't present your debit card during a mobile wallet transaction, so the risk of a stolen number is reduced. In addition, most mobile wallet platforms use a special security token to link your card with the terminal, rather than sending your card number. Since the transaction is completed using the security token, and your fingerprint or passcode is required, you have added protection against identity theft.
